Hi everyone! Please support Sophorn Cheang, she is working for the US Census, in the government’s outreach program to the Cambodian community, to make sure every Khmer is counted.
Sophorn will have a table outside the main building during on Saturday, to explain the Census and help people to fill out the forms. She’ll be at the table from about 8 am to 11 am.
The Census happens only once every ten years. It’s very important for everyone to complete, and this will help Khmer community. The US government needs to know how many people live in an area to allocate the appropriate amount of money and other resources to states and local communities. Local governments use the Census information to determine whether to provide official materials in Khmer language, for example, or to buy Khmer books/videos to put in libraries.
If Khmer people don’t fill out census forms, and thus aren’t counted, then we lose out.
Remember that events at the Wat, or sponsored by the Wat must not be political in nature, by which is meant not favoring one group or candidate over another. Doing so would jeopardize the not-for-profit status of Watt Dhammarangsi and the Cambodian Buddhist Society of Oregon. However, certain governmental and political activities that are allowed to be expressed, such as the Census, and also registering Cambodians to vote. As long as the activity is done in a way that doesn’t discriminate one group of people over another.
Thank you for your support. Hope to get everyone to complete their Census forms. Please stop by Sophorn’s table and at least say hi to her!
