The Wat is many things to many people. It is a place of worship, a tourist destination, a Dhamma school, a place of blessing, a community center. But at least every one can agree it is a peaceful place where anyone can go to find refuge.
We are lucky our elders had the dream 30 years ago to purchase and build this property and continue to donate their money and time to keep the temple going. However, they are getting old and need the help of the younger generation!
If you have the desire to volunteer, please contact the CBS board. Use the email contact form.
Take a few hours out of your week on a regular basis. There are lots of things that you can do to help. Cleaning and setup before major events like the New Years celebration. During the New Years celebration, help with parking, games, food offering. After New Years, need help with cleaning to remove refuse, sweep up / vacuum, put back the tables, chairs, etc.
People may recognize your work, and you’ll find good about it. At times, your work may go unnoticed, but you get the personal satisfaction that you contributed to the welfare of our Khmer and Buddhist community. Help to maintain the Wat as a monastery, a place of worship, and a place to learn the Dhamma.
SPECIFIC HELP NEEDED
Please add to this list by commenting below.
Parking Coordinators – A couple of people to stand near the entrance to divert traffic to the field on Saturday and Sunday. Sometimes people don’t want to walk, and want to park inside, next the buildings. But this takes up space, makes it a hazard especially for kids and elderly, don’t want them to get run over. The elderly have to walk farther. Also, less people can fit inside the temple grounds, and are prevented from enjoying the celebration. So please help divert traffic to the field.
Game Coordinators – A couple of people to help with organizing the games, explaining the rules, giving prizes. Kids will love you if you’re the one handing out prizes!
Clean Up – A group of people to help after each day’s morning ceremonies on Saturday and Sunday, to sweep and vacuum inside the Chan Hall, the main building where the ceremonies are held. Also to pick up refuse around the building, on the field.
Barbecue Day – We’ll have a barbecue on Sunday April 25th for all the volunteers, and ask to help one more time to put away signs, tables, etc. Arrive at 10 am, work an hour, eat an hour, work another hour, enjoy each others company, then go home.
CONCLUSION
By volunteering at the Wat, you help to clean the Wat and make it an inviting place for visitors, our community members, and the monastics who live at the Temple. The Wat is not just a tourist destination, not just a place to come once a year and celebrate major holidays, but also a place to learn the Dhamma and to find peace in your lives. You can take what you learn back into your every day life, knowing you made a positive difference for the community.
It’s not the appearance that matters, but your own intention and inside your heart/mind, as the Buddha taught us.
