| brahmā ca lokādhipatī sahampatī katañjalī andhivaram āyācatha santīdha sattāpparajjakkhajātikā tesetu dhammaṃ anukampimaṃ pajaṃ saddhamabheriṃ vinayañca kāyaṃ suttañca bandhaṃ abhidhammacammaṃ ākotayanto catusaccadandaṃ pabodha neyye parisāya majjhe | Brahma, the ruler of the sahampati world, joined his palms in reverence and entreated the unrivaled Buddha: There are beings here with little dust in their eyes; pray teach the Dhamma out of compassion for them. The teaching (Dhamma) of the good Buddha is like a drum: the Vinaya (disciplinary rule) is like the body of the drum; the Sutta (suture, the sermons) is like the cord tied around the body of the drum; the Abhidhamma is like the animal’s skin used for the drum head; the Fourfold Noble Truth is like the stick used to beat the drum so that the four assemblies of bhikkhus (monks), bhikkhunīs (nuns), upāsakas (laymen), and upāsikā (laywoman) can hear the Dhamma and awaken. |
