Hello,

I am a middle school teacher in Milwaukie, Oregon and I am currently teaching a unit on immigration and migration. We are reading the novel, Children of the River about a young Cambodian girl whose family had to flee during the Khmer Rouge occupation. I was wondering if your organization would have any information regarding potential guest speakers that could come to our classroom. My students are eager and open to learn as much as they can.

Sincerely,

Jessika

There is a lot packed into the final verse of Dhammapada chapter 2 and the story of Ven. Tissa. The theme of chapter 2 has been on mindfulness, also another word that is used is heedfulness, being aware. One benefit of developing mindfulness is for the individual to be able to make good decisions, with purpose and clarity, rather than just being reactionary.

There's the expression a picture can convey a thousand words, and so it is with Buddha's teachings, the Dhamma, and the Pali used to convey the teachings. The Dhamma and Pali is a very dense and descriptive language, and it has to be put into performance with you as the performing artist, for you to appreciate the rich meaning.

Verse 32 means to me the person who seeks the truth and who makes a certain amount of progress will fear slipping back to a previous state before gains were made. When you as seeker come to be aware of this fear, it's a sign you are close to reaching Nibbana in this life.

It seems a contradiction, because when you obtain Nibbana, you're supposed to be unaffected by emotional states such as fear. So when you are near, you're supposed to have less fear. However, it's not, because you have not obtained Nibbana. When you are close to perfection, you may have less faults than others, but you still have faults, and they become very magnified.

I read it as Lord Buddha's encouragement to the faithful practitioner to keep going, and a subtle suggestion not to be satisfied with the current gains, and also not to let yourself down, not to remain where you are.

On interpreting the story of Ven. Tissa, I'll leave to follow up comment.
